ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) is proud to announce that Betty McPhilimy, CIA, associate vice president for Northwestern University's office for audit and advisory services, has received the prestigious Victor Z. Brink Award for Distinguished Service. McPhilimy was awarded the honor at The IIA's 2010 International Conference in Atlanta on June 9, 2010.
"As one The IIA's founding fathers, Victor Brink would be so very proud of Betty McPhilimy and her 29 years of extraordinary participation in IIA activities," said IIA 2009-2010 Chairman of the Board Rod Winters, CIA, who presented the award. "She is an exemplary professional, a tireless internal audit advocate, and a seasoned and accomplished leader in our global organization."
Soon after joining IIA-Chicago Chapter in 1981, McPhilimy assumed a leadership role at the local level on the Board of Governors. Subsequently, she served as the chapter's 1988-1989 president. Her local involvement continues today as she serves on the chapter's Long-range Planning Committee. And recently, she helped shepherd IIA Chicago Chapter's gift of $125,000 over five years, one of the largest contributions ever made by a chapter to The IIA Research Foundation, to fund internal audit research.
On the global level, McPhilimy has served on numerous IIA international committees and ad hoc groups over the years, including Membership, Media-assisted Training, International Conference, Volunteer Structure Task Force, Governance Task Force, Global Nominating, Advocacy Advisory Group, and The IIA Research Foundation Board of Research Advisors. She also served as cochairman of the 1992 IIA International Conference, which was held in Chicago, and chaired the International Conference Committee 1996-1999.
McPhilimy served on The IIA's Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for seven years. She was elected 2004-2005 chairman of the board, during which time she challenged internal auditors worldwide to "Seize the Moment." She was a beacon of strength to The IIA's Global Headquarters staff following IIA President Bill Bishop's untimely passing in 2004, helping ensure things stayed on course until a new president came onboard. Not one to rest on her laurels, McPhilimy currently is a member of The IIA's Governance Committee and The IIA Research Foundation Fundraising Task Force.
